Your refrigerator's air vents must be clear so that cold air can circulate from the freezer to the refrigerator and back again. If the interior temperature is too warm, move boxes and packages inside the refrigerator and freezer away from the vents so that the airflow isn’t restricted. If the items in your freezer have ice crystals forming on them, the interior contains too much warm, humid air, which creates frost. Open the doors only when necessary and ensure they close properly. If your doors don’t close properly, ensure the refrigerator is level and that food packages aren’t preventing the door from closing. Wipe the gaskets with a damp cloth and apply a thin coat of paraffin wax.
Refrigerator Doesn't Run
If your Kenmore side-by-side doesn’t run, ensure the cord is plugged firmly into the outlet and check your electrical panel. If the breaker has tripped, reset it. If there is power running to the appliance, your refrigerator may be in the defrost cycle and will run when it ends, which typically takes 30 minutes. If your side-by-side features a control panel, check the status of the panel. If the lights are blinking sequentially, your refrigerator is still in the store-demonstration mode, which disables cooling. To disable the 'Demo Mode,' open a door and press “Ultra Ice” and “Ref. Temp” at the same time and hold for 5 seconds. If this doesn’t correct the problem, call a certified technician to inspect the refrigerator.
Ice Maker Problems
Most Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators offer the option of a built-in ice maker. If your ice maker isn’t producing ice, ensure the ice maker's power switch is in the 'On' position, and the water supply is turned on and connected. If it’s a new refrigerator, wait 24 hours for the refrigerator to cool enough to produce ice. Check the freezer temperature as well. For models with digital control panels, next to the “Frz. Temp” button on the control panel you’ll see LED bars. Models without a control panel use a dial to set the temperature. The freezer temperature should be set at 'Level 3' on most models, which is the setting that is recommended by the manufacturer. The higher the number on the temperature controls, the colder the temperature setting. If these steps don’t correct the problem, the water shutoff valve or water line may be clogged. Contact a plumber to repair the problem.
Compressor Running Too Often
The compressor motor on your Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator runs when the appliance is cooling. If the room temperature is higher than usual, the refrigerator will work harder to cool its interior and the compressor will run more often. Lower the room temperature or turn the temperature setting up one level. If the door is opened frequently, or a large amount of food has been added to the refrigerator or freezer, the interior temperature goes up and the compressor runs more than usual to bring it back to the proper temperature. If none of these things are an issue, check the condenser coils on the back of the refrigerator. Dirt or dust coating the coils will cause the compressor to work harder to cool the interior. Clean the coils.
